Staffing jobs for the week of July 8–14 grew 5.5% from the prior week, which included the Fourth of July, according to the ASA Staffing Index. Survey respondents cited the lingering effect of the holiday as a factor that hampered growth. The index increased to a value of 93, but it was 4.8% lower than the same week last year—the 2018 reading was a record high for the 28th week of the year.

The ASA Staffing Index four-week moving average held at 93, down 3.3% from the same period in 2018. Similar to the weekly reading, the year-to-year four-week average gap grew as staffing jobs did not fully offset the holiday decline. So far in 2019, staffing employment has not matched the comparative readings of 2018, most of which were all-time peaks.

This week, containing the 12th day of the month, will be used in the July monthly employment situation report that will be issued by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics on Aug. 2.

The ASA Staffing Index is reported nine days after each workweek, making it a near real-time measure of staffing employment trends. ASA research shows that staffing employment is a coincident economic indicator.
